🪱 Veggie Zone — Soil Prep

Bed: 2 sections · each 18″ × 95″ · wall 8″ · current soil 5.5″
Headroom: 2.5″ → add 1″ compost amendment + 1″ soil (raised bed mix) → final soil level 7.5″ (0.5″ below rim ✓)
E.B. Stone Raised Bed Mix — 2 cu ft bags  THIS IS THE SOIL
Complete growing medium (compost + bark + perlite). Goes on top as the 1″ soil layer.
E.B. Stone Organic Compost — Garden Amendment bag  AMENDMENT
Soil conditioner/enricher — goes under the raised bed mix. Not soil by itself. ~1 cu ft spare for pot.
FoxFarm Grow Big — 1 qt liquid
Start within 2 weeks of transplanting. General: 2–3 tsp per gallon every other watering. Heavy: 4 tsp per gallon every other watering. Switch to bloom fertilizer at first signs of buds.
E.B. Stone Fish Emulsion with Kelp — liquid
Feed monthly during growing season. Mix per label; apply 1 gal of diluted mixture per 20 ft of row (2 gal for larger plants).
🪴 Pot: Use ~1 cu ft leftover compost to top up — no separate purchase needed.

🌳 Tree and Shrub Zone — Soil & Products

2× Dwarf Lime (pots, north fence) — #1 seedless ~25–30 gal · #2 seeded ~20–25 gal · Both fruit annually
1× Makrut Lime (ground, NW corner) — ~20 ft · Harvest leaves for cooking · Fruit not edible
2× Olive (ground, west fence) — merged canopy · Non-fruiting · Ornamental / privacy screen
1× Dwarf Lemon (ground, west fence leftmost) — overgrown, never fruited · likely rootstock takeover
1× Jasmine vine (ground, west fence) — training up trellis · flowers, low fragrance
1× Bay Laurel (ground, SW corner) — ~25 ft after pruning · culinary bay leaves
1× Jasmine #2 (ground, left of bay laurel) — stunted by bay laurel shade · masonry trellis
3× Camellia (ground, south fence) — thriving · red flowers · acid-loving
1× Mandarin (teal ceramic pot, south fence) — biennial fruiting · drip connected · needs citrus fertilizer
1× Bottlebrush Callistemon (ground, SE corner) — hummingbird magnet · drought tolerant · José prunes
Pots: top up with citrus/container mix only — do not use raised bed mix.
E.B. Stone Citrus & Fruit Tree Food — granular
Apply 3× per year: Feb–Mar, May–Jun, Sep–Oct. Scratch into top inch of soil, water well. Per label for pot size.
Citrus & Palm Potting Mix — small bag
Coarser, faster-draining than raised bed mix — required for citrus in containers. Use to top up lime pot when soil is low.

💧 Tree and Shrub Zone — Irrigation

Zone is calibrated to the thirstiest plants — potted citrus (limes, mandarin). Drought-tolerant ground plants (olives, bay, bottlebrush) tolerate the extra water without harm.

☀️ Seasonal Guidance

🌱 Safe planting window: After mid-April when overnight lows stay above 50°F and soil is consistently warm.
🌶 Ghost pepper: Wait until soil reaches 65°F — typically early May. Cold soil stunts growth permanently.
🔥 Peak heat (Jul–Aug): Temps can hit 95–100°F. Water daily; consider shade cloth if prolonged. Watch for blossom drop above 95°F.
🍂 Wind-down: Stop planting new starts after Sep 1. Harvest all peppers before first frost (late Nov/early Dec in this zone).
